ANSI Summary of Changes

ACCA is an ANSI-accredited standards developer that develops standards and supports the American National Standards Institute (ANSI). ANSI approval of ACCA manuals, procedures and processes verifies that the principles of openness and due process have been followed in developing these materials, and that a consensus of those directly affected by the standards has been achieved.

ACCA’s standards activity is overseen by our Standards Task Team, which forms subcommittees as needed to oversee specific standards development. The process is open and you are encouraged to get involved; for more information, contact standards-sec@acca.org.

ACCA Announces ANSI Public Review for Reaffirmation of ANSI/ACCA Manual J – 2016, Residential Load Calculation

Alexandria, VA (October 29, 2025) - The Air Conditioning Contractors of America Educational Institute (ACCA-EI) Standards Task Team (STT) announces an American National Standards Institute (ANSI) public review period for reaffirmation of ANSI/ACCA 2 Manual J - 2016, Residential Load Calculation.

The 45-day ANSI public review period will start on October 31 with a comment deadline of December 15. This standard is proposed to be reaffirmed with no changes in accordance with ANSI’s 5-year essential requirements. A separate revision project for Manual J is in the development stages with future changes planned for 2026.

Manual J is intended for producing HVAC equipment sizing loads for single-family detached homes, small multi-unit structures, condominiums, town houses, and manufactured homes. A proper load calculation, performed in accordance with the Manual J procedure, is required by national building codes and most state and local jurisdictions.

ACCA ANNOUNCES SECOND ANSI PUBLIC REVIEW FOR MODIFICATIONS TO PROPOSED “ADDENDUM C” TO MANUAL S® – 2023 RESIDENTIAL EQUIPMENT SELECTION 

Alexandria, VA (October 20, 2025) - The Air Conditioning Contractors of America Educational Institute (ACCA-EI) Standards Task Team (STT) announces an American National Standards Institute (ANSI) second public review for modifications to proposed “Addendum c” to ANSI/ACCA 3 Manual S® –2023, Residential Equipment Selection, as a revised industry standard.

The 30-day ANSI public review period will be from October 31, 2025, to November 30, 2025. Proposed Addendum c will supplement ANSI/ACCA 3 Manual S® –2023, Addendum a – 2024, and Addendum b –2024. The modifications to the proposed Addendum c are solely based on comments received during the first public review draft on June 6, 2025.

Manual S® provides procedures for selecting and sizing residential cooling equipment, heat pumps, electric heating coils, furnaces, boilers, ancillary dehumidification equipment, humidification equipment, and direct evaporative cooling equipment. Manual S® is also a requirement specified in the International Residential Code and the Uniform Mechanical Code.

Alexandria, VA (October 6, 2025) - The Air Conditioning Contractors of America Educational Institute (ACCA-EI) Standards Task Team (STT) announces an American National Standards Institute (ANSI) public review period for reaffirmation of ANSI/ACCA 9 QIvp – 2016, HVAC Quality Installation Verification Protocols.

The 45-day ANSI public review period will start on October 3 with a comment deadline of November 17. This standard is proposed to be reaffirmed with no changes in accordance with ANSI’s 5-year essential requirements.

This standard specifies the protocols to verify that elements of a specific HVAC system installation complying with ACCA 5 QI, HVAC Quality Installation Specification. The verification protocols apply to installations of HVAC equipment/components in new and existing residential and commercial buildings that seek to demonstrate adherence to the requirements of the ACCA 5 QI Standard.

ACCA Announces ANSI Public Review for Proposed ACCA 5 QI, HVAC Quality Installation Manual

Alexandria, VA (October 6, 2025) - The Air Conditioning Contractors of America Educational Institute (ACCA-EI) Standards Task Team (STT) announces an American National Standards Institute (ANSI) public review period for ACCA 5 QI, HVAC Quality Installation Specification, as a new American National Standard.

The 45-day ANSI public review period will start on October 10 with a comment deadline of November 24, 2025. The proposed standard is unchanged from ANSI/ACCA 5 QI – 2015, for the purpose of regaining its ANSI designation as a new standard.

ACCA 5 QI contains minimum requirements for properly designing, installing, testing and commissioning HVAC installations for residential and light commercial applications. Developed by abroad coalition of industry stakeholders, the standard identifies consensus requirements associated with quality installations, acceptable procedures for measuring or verifying the attainment of those requirements, and acceptable forms of documentation to show compliance with the requirements.

Member Input Needed – ACCA Reviewing Several of its ANSI Recognized Standards for Potential Updates 

ACCA has begun the process to review several of its current standards that are recognized by the American National Standards Institute (ANSI).  According to ANSI’s Essential Requirements, once a standard is approved it must be reviewed every 5 years to determine whether it requires (a) additional changes or updates, (b) reaffirmation if no changes are needed, or (c) withdrawal. 

ANSI/ACCA 5 QI – 2015

ANSI/ACCA 5 QI – 2015, HVAC Quality Installation Specification

This standard details the nationally recognized minimum criteria for the proper installation of HVAC systems in residential and commercial applications.

ANSI/ACCA 6QR – 2015

ANSI/ACCA 6QR – 2015, Restoring the Cleanliness of an HVAC System

This standard establishes minimum requirements to restore the cleanliness of residential and commercial HVAC systems in accordance with manufacturer- or customer-specified criteria.

ANSI/ACCA 14

ANSI/ACCA 14, QMref – 2015, Quality Maintenance of Commercial Refrigeration Systems

This standard establishes a minimum maintenance program for maintaining refrigeration equipment found in supermarkets, convenience stores, food service, and warehouses, operating with saturated suction temperatures between -40°F and +40°F.

ANSI/ACCA 2 Manual J – 2016

ANSI/ACCA 2 Manual J – 2016, Residential Load Calculations

This manual produces HVAC equipment sizing loads for single-family detached homes, small multi-unit structures, condominiums, town houses, and manufactured homes.  A proper load calculation, performed in accordance with the Manual J 8th Edition procedure, is required by national building codes and most state and local jurisdictions.  Manual J8 provides detailed requirements for producing a residential load calculations per the CLF/CLTD method.
