Residential Airflow and Zoning Overview

A 2-hour online course for field personnel on the fundamentals of system airflow and basic zoning principles. Air balancing is the missing link in getting residential HVAC systems to perform near their peak levels. This course covers the air diagnostics and balancing techniques to optimize system airflow. Topics include air-flow measurements, restrictive duct issues, duct leakage requirements, and proper blower settings. A/C and Refrigerant Charging

April 19, 2023 at 1PM ET
The A/C Refrigerant Charging Fundamentals course emphasizes the principles that must be understood to adjust the refrigerant charge correctly and accurately in residential and light commercial heat pump and A/C systems. Students will learn about refrigerant safety considerations, compliance with EPA regulations, how to calculate and correctly weigh-in the refrigerant charge, as well as how to properly fine tune the refrigerant level using both the superheat and subcooling methods. Topics will include understanding the basic refrigeration cycle and system components, proper test instruments and tool requirements, refrigerant piping installation considerations and related issues, as well as common errors to avoid, ensuring a clean trouble-free system. Students will also learn about the different types of metering devices and their operation, the proper the use of manufacturer’s charging charts, the importance of setting up and verifying proper indoor airflow, and refrigerant charging tips, techniques, and best practices based on years of real-world experience. This class takes place on April 19, 2023 at 1PM ET and is $99 for non-members and $89* for Bronze members.

A/C Fundamentals & Basic Troubleshooting

May 9, 2023 at 1PM ET
The Air Conditioning Fundamentals and Basic Troubleshooting course focuses on teaching the foundational knowledge that must be understood in order to properly service and diagnose issues in residential and light commercial A/C systems. Emphasis is placed on safety, understanding the refrigeration cycle and components, superheat and subcooling, proper airflow, electrical components and their operation, electrical component testing and diagnostic procedures, as well as assessing overall system performance. Topics include compressors, TXV’s and metering devices, fan motors, contactors, capacitors, as well as proper test procedures and multimeter use. Additionally, refrigerant cycle diagnostics will be introduced, including the correct use and understanding of pressures, temperatures, superheat, subcooling and compressor amp draw to develop an accurate assessment of the refrigerant side performance. Practical tips and suggestions are offered throughout the course, based on years of actual, real-world field experience. This class takes place on May 9, 2023 at 1PM ET and is $99 for non-members and $89* for Bronze members.

Heat Pump Fundamentals

May 10, 2023 at 1PM ET
The Heat Pump System Fundamentals course focuses on teaching the foundational knowledge that must be understood in order to properly service and diagnose issues in residential and light commercial heat pump systems. Topics include learning the heat pump refrigeration cycle and components, reversing valves, supplemental heat, the defrost cycle and types of controls, heat pump electrical components and sequence of operation, as well as assessing overall heat pump heating side system performance. Additional topics include TXV's and flow controls, check valves, defrost control boards, and electric heat strips. Practical, real-world tips and suggestions are offered throughout the course, based on years of actual field experience. This class takes place on May 10, 2023 at 1PM ET and is $99 for non-members and $89* for Bronze members.

ABOUT THE INSTRUCTORS

Anthony MaynorAnthony Maynor

Anthony Maynor has spent his entire career, since before graduating from high school, working in the heating & air conditioning industry.  Starting out as an installer’s helper and working his way through all roles and aspects of the trade, eventually starting his own business.  He has owned and operated a successful HVAC business for 20+ years, receiving multiple industry awards and accreditations.

He has an A.A.S. in Heating, Air Conditioning and Refrigeration Technology from Wake Technical Community College.  He is NATE and IGSHPA certified and is also qualified as an unlimited/master license in multiple states, including North Carolina, where he currently holds an Unlimited Heating & Air Conditioning Contractor License, an Unlimited Electrical Contractor License, an Unlimited Plumbing Contractor License and an Unlimited Refrigeration Contractor License.

Anthony is a qualified N.C. Department of Insurance (NCDOI) Level 3 Unlimited Mechanical and Electrical Inspector.  He is also an NCDOI certified instructor for mechanical and electrical inspector training and continuing education.  Additionally, he has been actively teaching heating and air-conditioning certification and continuing education classes through the local community college, distributor and contractor trade associations to those in the HVAC service and inspections fields since 2006.

Anthony is also an airline transport rated pilot and an FAA certified Gold Seal Flight instructor in single & multi-engine airplanes.  In his spare time, he enjoys teaching and sharing his passion for aviation with others.  

Bill TimberlakeBill Timberlake, P.E.

Bill Timberlake’s career has encompassed project management, facilities maintenance and shipboard power-plant experience with the U.S. Navy Civil Engineer Corps and Nuclear Power Program, as well as the private sector.

During his 24-year career military service with the U.S. Navy, Bill served in various roles to include Deputy Director of The White House Military Project Management Division where he was directly responsible for construction/renovation projects in support of Presidential Infrastructure Programs.  Bill’s other past duties include a Mechanical Engineering Instructor assignment at the U.S. Naval Academy and two Public Works Officer assignments at various east coast Naval installations.

Upon military retirement, Bill worked as a Senior Mechanical Engineer at a large architectural and engineering firm and as an Engineering Program Director for the world’s largest owner of upscale hotels and resorts (Marriott/Host Hotels & Resorts).  Most recently, Bill was a full-time instructor of Heating & Cooling (HVAC Technology) for 7 years at Wake Technical Community College in Raleigh where he taught numerous classes within the 2-year program.

Bill is also the owner of William Timberlake Residential Engineering that specializes in Residential HVAC Designs to include full compliance of ACCA Manual J, S & D procedures.  Additionally, Bill teaches the HVAC design software program “Wrightsoft” to HVAC contractors throughout the Raleigh area.

Bill’s education includes a Master of Engineering from Old Dominion University, Bachelor of Science in Mechanical Engineering from the University of Maryland and Diploma of HVAC/R from Wake Technical Community College.  He is a Registered Professional Engineer (P.E.) in Maryland, Virginia and North Carolina.
