Forklift Operator Safety Training

Forklift Operator Safety Training

OSHA requires employers to ensure forklift operators are competent to operate powered industrial trucks safely. This online course provides formal instruction and prepares operators for hands-on training and workplace performance evaluation.

Forklift accidents are preventable

Forklift accidents cause roughly 85 deaths and 34,900 serious injuries annually in the United States. Many of these incidents stem from operators who lack proper training on stability principles, load capacity, and safe maneuvering practices.

OSHA 29 CFR 1910.178 requires employers to ensure operators receive formal instruction, hands-on training, and workplace performance evaluation before operating a forklift.

Forklift Operator Safety Training FAQ

OSHA requires employers to certify that forklift operators have completed three components: formal instruction, hands-on training, and a performance evaluation. Employers must provide training and evaluate operator performance before certification.

No. The employer certifies operators after they have completed all three components in accordance with OSHA standards. This course provides the formal instruction portion only.

The training is 3 hours of online content.

OSHA requires forklift operators to receive refresher training every three years, or sooner if they’re involved in an accident, observed operating unsafely, or assigned to a different type of forklift.

The course covers forklift fundamentals, stability and capacity principles, load handling techniques, safe driving practices, and inspection and maintenance procedures. It also includes a supplemental module on pedestrian safety.

No. This training covers fundamentals and is appropriate for new operators with no forklift experience.

No equipment is required. This is online theory-based training. Hands-on practice and competency evaluation happen in your workplace under proper supervision.

Operators receive an ACCA certificate of completion showing they have finished the formal instruction component of OSHA-compliant forklift training. Employers create their own certification documentation after operators complete all training components and workplace evaluation.

This course covers general principles that apply across forklift types. Employers must provide additional training specific to the forklift types operators will use in their workplace.

Important disclaimer about forklift certification
Per OSHA 29 CFR 1910.178 standards, it is the employer who certifies forklift operators after they complete formal instruction, practical training, and performance evaluation. ACCA cannot make this certification for you. The computer-based training offered by ACCA is meant to be the formal instruction component of an employer's forklift certification program.
