ACCA's A2L Safety Training program is the proud recipient of the 2025 ASAE Gold Circle Award.
As the HVACR industry evolves, HFCs such as R-410A and R-404A are being phased down in favor of new, more energy-efficient and environmentally friendly lower-GWP refrigerants, such as R-32 and R-454B.
Unlike the last refrigerant transition, which shifted from the use of one nonflammable refrigerant to another, many of these new refrigerants are mildly flammable (A2L), so additional training will be needed in order to use them safely.

ACCA’s program was developed based on the ASHRAE Standards 15 (2019), 15.2 (2022), and 34 (2019) and UL Safety Standards 60335-2-40 (2019), and 60335-2-89 (2019), which provides an introduction to the new refrigerant, instruction on how to handle it safely, and reviews tools that will be needed to work on equipment with A2L refrigerants.
The ACCA – A2L Refrigerant Safety Course Outline (2023) is divided into five modules. Each module is divided into sections that delve deeper into the respective topics, providing comprehensive knowledge about A2L refrigerants.
An overview of A2L refrigerants, including their evolution, properties, and the applicable standards. It also discusses environmental trends, safety concerns, and precautions related to A2L refrigerants.
Focuses on when system replacement is needed, OEM recommendations, and matching indoor and outdoor units. It also covers the evaluation of refrigerant piping in existing and new homes and the documentation required.
Introduces the concept of refrigerant charge calculation, focusing on A2L refrigerants. It provides a basic calculation for refrigerant change and offers applied practice scenarios.
This module discusses the installation of refrigerant piping, joint preparation, protection and support, and requirements for shafts, ventilation, and penetrations.
Covers safety procedures for inspection and service, adding and recovering refrigerants, piping system tests, and documentation practices for A2L refrigerants.
