ACCA Tours Carrier/UTC Center for Intelligent Buildings

by: Todd Washam

Before ACCA staff and Executive Committee from the Board of Directors attended the HVACR Industry Partners Forum, Chairman Eric Knaak, President/CEO Bart James, and Vice President Todd Washam visited the Carrier/UTC Center for Intelligent Buildings (CIB) in Florida. Carrier is one of ACCA’s longtime Corporate Partners and this was a great opportunity for ACCA to support our friends and partners (and former coworkers!) at Carrier.

ACCA’s host, Mary Milmoe-Rogers, vice president of global communications for Carrier, worked at ACCA from 1984 to 1987! She took the time to show us behind the scenes at the CIB and modestly says she oversees much of the building which is home to Carrier, Otis elevators, Collins Aerospace, and Pratt & Whitney, and dozens of other companies.

But, when ACCA met with Bob McDonough, President, Carrier, he said that Mary RUNS the building and was responsible for it moving from a concept to a reality. It’s great to see a former ACCA colleague in such a leadership position with one of ACCA’s Corporate Partners.

A key takeaway from our tour with Carrier was how important the ACCA-Carrier partnership is for everyone. Mr. McDonough highlighted that support for ACCA means supporting contractor excellence, ACCA’s advocacy work, and the many Carrier contractors who are ACCA members. We very proud to see how important ACCA’s work is to the leadership of one of the largest manufacturers in the world.

ACCA was amazed to see the range of products on display at the CIB, from escalators to cruise ship cooling and fire suppression solutions. One of the most amazing items on display was Willis Carrier’s original duct slide rule! We recommend that you take the opportunity to visit the CIB if you’re in the Palm Beach area. ACCA is hoping to host future meetings there, so we might see you there soon!
