    Hi,

We are looking into creating a family and friends program for our employees. As you all know sides jobs are common and can be costly to the owner. We understand our employees what to help friends and family out and maybe make a little extra money, but it is not okay if its at the cost of the company. We are thinking about having them write down a list of 15 or so friends and family that they may want to do some discounted work for. We want all of these jobs to be invoiced through our office like any other job. I think giving special perks for these people will help make our employees happy, while not costing the company. The question I have for you all is what can we do where we as a company make money, as well as the tech make a little extra to. I am looking forward to hearing from you and I am open to any suggestions or thoughts.

    Thank You

I tell my employees that we  will allow them to do family, neighbor, and benevolence jobs as long as they receive no compensation for the work, buy all parts and equipment through the business, and let us know in advance.  The no compensation part has had a great limiting effect.  Once an employee begins charging for extra work he/she has become a competitor.  I make it clear that Competitors will no longer be on my payroll.  What ever you decide to do needs to have  very clear boundaries and this has worked well for us.

That's an excelent idea, I would like to do something like that myself. The only thing that comes to mind is something like you might find at Home Depot or Lowes where they provide an employee discount, you could even extend it to family & friends if wanted too. Looking forward to seeing some great ideas in this string.

Many years ago we established a "Friends & Family Rewards" program to offer a benefit and discourage employees from considering "side jobs".  It is a three tier program designed to provide an opportunity for all our employees (including the office staff) to benefit from our services.  The first tier is "Employee Discount" which provides between 25-35% reduction on standard pricing on maintenance, repair and installation services.  We provide an additional discount during our traditionally slow months to put jobs on the board.  Second, is a 15-20% discount for "Family" (immediate) along the same structure as before; and lastly a discount for "Friends" of 10%.   We extend a "spiff" to the employee who brought new equipment sales in and all work is scheduled, runs through the books with standard mark-ups and can be assigned to any crew/tech working for us.  We include this in our handbook under our employee benefits.

I like the idea of having tiers. Do you have a set limit on how many friends can receive the discount? One issue that we are dealing with is one employee made the point that he KNOWS more people than we were going to allow on the list. We aren't running a discount company. Another issue is, we give our service agreement customers a 15% discount. I don't want to lose service agreements because they are saying I can give you a friends or family discount that is worth more.
