Portable printers for Android Tablets and CC swipers

Does anyone have recommendations for portable printers? We are setting up all of our service technicians with Android tablets and will need portable printers for customers who do not want their invoices emailed. Also we are just now starting to implement credit card readers in the field. If anyone has had good experience with any of these products I would greatly appreciate your input.

    Lisa,

When we went to tablets in the field; we assumed that we would need portable printers as well.  However, the number of people requesting paper receipts was much lower than expected. All of our field technicians are on tablets and we are completely paperless in the field.  If a customer wants a paper receipt the tech simply sends a message back to the office and we mail it to them. No printers... no problems!
I don't know how many techs you have out there but with (our) 7 techs... it is still manageable.

I too would like a recommendation for portable printers. I have been told by more than one in the industry that they don't hold up long, especially in the trucks. This has been an issue for some clients that we do not give a paper copy/receipt right there after we just took the money. Nobody wants any trust issues. We can E-mail them right away, however many people do not care to share their E-mail, so we mail them a copy.  "paperless" ??

When we 1st went paperless with netbooks several years ago (now using I pads) we were unable to find a reasonably priced mobile printer that was reliable in extreme temps (cold or hot) we found it more economical to mail a paper invoice to the few customers that wanted one. As for credit card readers it's hard to beat the 'Square'.

Best wishes on your transformation to mobile billing it will speed up your invoice processing considerably.

    Happy Holidays

I'll agree with Steve - we've been paperless for years now, and very few clients have a problem with invoices sent by email. We do have paper contracts for larger projects, but they're sent out from the office. If a customer can't or doesn't want to use email, the tech sends a message to the office, and we can mail anything from there.

Credit card swipers are a different story. Ideally, you'll want something that will integrate with your dispatch and accounting software, but you want acceptable processing rates, too. One challenge you may have is that if you're like us, you will want to put your phones or tablets in the most indestructible cases possible (we use Otterbox Defender series). When you use a larger case, the plug on the credit card reader won't always fit snugly against the device in the audio jack. Regular extension cables provide only one-way data transfer and not the two-way data transfer you need for a credit card reader. I'm sure there are more options these days, but at the time we started using them, this was the only cable we could find on the market: CellPay Accessories 6" 3.5 mm audio extension cable Otterbox and all 3.5mm mobile readers

PS, if you're going mobile, I highly recommend using a mobile device management (MDM) app to manage your devices. Even if your devices are employee-owned, an MDM can help control what they can and can't do with your company data. We have Apple products, so we use Jamf, but here are a couple of articles Android options:

I would love to have a portable printer myself. I use a wireless printer in my van but it' a big one. Takes up a lot of room. I use paperless when I can but when you have a lot of older customers they don't even have a computer.

As for accepting cc I use payer. Been very good to me I use to use square but I kept getting weird emails stating they are from square and I need to update my banking info. With payer you can also offer financing.  Great tool to use.

    Ron-

I was going to check out Payer for accepting credit cards and financing based on your recommendation but can't find this company.  Could you give me a little more information?

    Thanks

You might be looking for Payzer, we switched recently and cut our fees in half. We haven't fired up the financing yet, but plan to.

    Cindy,

I think the company you are looking for is actually "Payzer".   We switched to Payzer last year and have been extremely happy with our service.
