The RESNET Standards Management Board (SMB) officially approved a new work item to recognize elements of HVAC quality installation, per the ACCA 5 QI Standard, in the HERS Index / Energy Rating Index.
I attended the 2018 RESNET Annual conference and serve on the SMB, which oversees the development of standards for RESENT’s internal use, as well as those intended for designation as American National Standards.
The new work item, though only officially passed at the conference, has been an ongoing project. In May 2016, an informal task group began to discuss what elements of HVAC Quality Installation should be evaluated. The purpose of the standard is to identify the tasks and procedures that a trained HERS Rater could perform. It will also provide the calculations to incorporate the findings into an improved, lowered HERS Index or Energy Rating Index.
ACCA has four representatives serving on the task group to help ensure that the contractors perspective is considered. Thus far, the tasks are either noninvasive or make use of measurement ports already provided by the installing HVAC contractor.
The standard is still under development, it is expected to be submitted for public review this fall. ACCA will keep its members posted on developments as they unfold.
