ACCA Contractor Training Series: COMMERCIAL Design for Quality Installation

If your company needs simplified, practical procedures for calculating both heat loss and heat gain for small commercial structures using unitary air conditioning equipment, this Manual N training is for you.

With a focus on ACCA’s Manual N5AE this training helps contractors develop an understanding of how to calculate the various components of a commercial facility’s heating and cooling load using computer based software.

While emphasis is placed on identifying and calculating peak load conditions, discussion is also directed at understanding the structure’s needs under part-load conditions. Much of the information covered is based on the ASHRAE Handbook of Fundamentals.

This three day experience will give you all of the tools necessary to Design for Quality Installation.  On Day 1 you will learn how to size and choose the proper equipment for your particular application and geographic region of the country.  On Day 2 you will learn how to design a ducted distribution system to extract the proper amount of air out of the equipment and delivered it to the areas to be heated and/or cooled.  Day 3 offers instruction on an ANSI Standard (ACCA Standard 5) by which all quality HVAC installations can be compared.  In addition, a peek at some really helpful software that can dramatically minimize the time required to perform all of the required calculations and system design without sacrificing quality or accuracy.

Day One - Manual N5AE – Commercial Load Calculations
o Limitations, guidelines and definitions
o How heat moves, human comfort and fenestration
o Opaque panels and Internal loads
o Infiltration and duct system loads
o Ventilation and blower heat

Day Two – Manual Q – Low Pressure, Low Velocity Commercial Duct System Design
o Duct classifications, function and geometry
o Duct system performance, fan curves and system pressure changes
o Air side devices
o Duct sizing methods

Day Three – ACCA Standard 5 and Wrightsoft Introduction
o (HVAC Installation comparisons) HVAC Quality Installation Specification
o Establishing templates
o Use in load calculation and air distribution

It is recommended that attendees bring the following to class:
o A LAPTOP COMPUTER WITH Microsoft® Windows 2000, XP, or Vista operating system and Microsoft Excel 2000 or later.
o Laptop must have CD drive to load software.
o Network password-protected computers must be unlocked to accept new software.
o Four-function calculator
o Computer mouse

Prerequisites:                                                     
o Students will be expected to understand the basics of Microsoft® Windows. 

Who should attend: Contractors, design and utility personnel, wholesalers, energy commission officials, licensing and code officials, and others interested in learning the importance, including the economic and environmental benefits, that accurate residential load calculation procedures have on system design. 

Note:  Manual J8AE, Manual D, Manual T, Manual S, ACCA Standard 5, the ACCA Duct Slide Rule Calculator, and Wrightsoft Demo Software are included in the tuition cost.  Students may purchase Right-Suite Residential or Elite Software’s RHVAC from ACCA after the training at a special discount.  Attendees are encouraged to bring a laptop computer and a calculator.  Tuition does not include food or lodging.

About the Presenter: Jack Rise, CMS, is a Certificate Member Specialist of the Refrigeration Service Engineers Society (RSES). He has extensive industry experience having worked as a contractor for 18 years, as a distributor for 13 years and for a major HVAC manufacturer for 5 years. In 2004 Jack formed his own company, Jack Rise HVAC Technical Training, and works out of his office in Tampa, Florida.

Jack is an EPIC certified instructor for all of the ACCA residential manuals, He travels extensively around the country conducting seminars on residential and commercial load calculations, system design, and on the use of HVAC computer based software. Jack currently runs training sessions for NATE and EPA/CFC certifications, and is an instructor for his local ACCA chapter.

Jack is a 30 year member of RSES and serves on the Board of directors of the North Jersey Chapter of ACCA.
